Chipping
Mike here wants to make a chip, and has technical questions about how to make it happen. See if any of ya'll can help him.

DIY-IT 1.0
The preoccupation of IT GarageDIY-IT — is also the subject of an entire issue of Esther Dyson's Release 1.0 this month. In fact I wrote it, with excellent assistance from Esther and Christina Koukkos at EDventure.
I've been thinking constantly of all the things I wish we'd put in there (that I've learned in the few days that have passed since I turned in my last draft); but the nature of each Release 1.0 issue is to locate itself historically ahead of the curve, before the inflection point. So if we miss some stuff, it's cool. The future is just arriving.
I've been reading Release 1.0 for twenty years. It's a way cool thing finally to write for it as well.

He blogs, he scores!
Brian Dear, of Brianstorm, Denounce and Nettle fame, is the subject of a cover story in this week's San Diego Reader, due out Thursday. What's more, he's being paid to write the story. And they sought him out. What they wanted was 8000 words, straight off the blog, in one big wad to put in the Reader. They sent a check. Came to 25¢ a word. Now Brian, and the rest of us, await. Here are Brian's closing paragraphs of his saga about the saga:
I remain very curious how the Reader, a print publication after all, is going to deal with formatting 30 days' worth of blog material in their publication. I asked them if they'd let me peek at the layout before they went to print. "NO," was the reply, in all caps. How are they gonna handle URLs? Especially the really long ones. I'm envisioning the typical superlong URL snaking its way through ads for laser hair removal, skin rejuvenation, liposuction, and microdermabrasion . . . We'll see.
I'll post a photo of the cover on Thursday once the issue hits the newsstands. If anyone outside of the San Diego area wants me to send them a copy of this week's issue, email me at the address shown at the far bottom of this page (I'd ask that you pay for postage, but I'll be glad to pick up a copy and send it to you).
One other thing . . . Christian Crumlish asked me on The WELL if he could have the scoop to this story, and I gave it to him. Here's his writeup on the Reader deal.

Transistor of Venus
The kid and I have been sitting outside with a shortwave radio listening to a Radio Nederland program (9590KHz in the 31 meter band, from the transmitter in Bonaire) on the Transit of Venus. Here's the Radio Nederland page on the event. Very well done, both on the air and in print. Here's the ResearchFile program page.
So much more fun listening to it over the airwaves than the Webwaves, even though the latter gives us a much cleaner signal.
Space.com and other sites will cover the transit live. It won't be visible here on the Left Coast, unfortunately.
